Coolest Teacher Ever Sends a Student to Space Camp

So one lucky student from Glacier Valley Elementary School is headed to NASA space camp this summer. And it’s thanks to Alaska’s 2011 Teacher of the Year, Lorrie Heagy.

Check out the story from the Juneau Empire:

“Youth attending the week-long space camp can choose from three courses — robotics, aeronautics and space. Heagy said Glacier Valley’s LEGO robotics team, the Robot Bears, were already interested in robotics and team members have shown dedication, arriving early to school to work on their robot.”

100 Years Ago the Biggest Volcanic Eruption of the 20th Century Rocked Alaska

“People in Juneau, Alaska, about 750 miles from the volcano, heard the sound of the blast – over one hour after it occurred.”

Next week marks the 100 year anniversary of the Novarupta Volcano eruption on the Alaskan Peninsula — the most forceful volcano eruption of the 20th century. How big was it? According to NASA:

  • It expelled three cubic MILES of magma and ash.
  • When all of that stuff landed it covered an area of 3,000 square miles.
  • All that magma and ash on the ground was a foot deep.
  • According to Geology.com, “people in Juneau, Alaska, about 750 miles from the volcano, heard the sound of the blast – over one hour after it occurred.”
  • The ash in the sky blocked out the sun on Kodiak Island.

How You Can Learn How to Spot a Liar in Juneau

By Eric Athas

If you haven’t noticed, there’s a crime conference happening in Juneau right now. No, not a conference where criminals get together to scheme (although that would be fun to write about), but a conference for law enforcement officials to learn.

Why Today is a Good Day for Juneau Beer Fanatics

(Image via Alaskan Brewing Company)

By Eric Athas

Update:

There have been some questions about where else (other than Juneau) people can get their hands on the ale. Luckily for some of you, the beer is in fact available in some areas other than Juneau. Alaskan Brewing Company has a “Brew Finder” on its web site. Just search under the “Alaskan Pilot Series” option and enter your zip code.

Original Post:

Ever since Alaskan Brewing Company announced its highly coveted Alaskan Raspberry Wheat Ale was returning this summer, Twitter has been asking where and when.

‘Cows Are Dropping Calves All Over Town Right Now’

(Image of a moose via Flickr user annikkinet/Creative Commons)

By Eric Athas

Heads up, Juneau: Moose calving season is here.

There have already been some scary stories of moose attacks, but the wildest comes out Anchorage where six-year-old Chloe Metzger was stomped on by an angry cow moose in her backyard.

The Anchorage Daily News has the details:

“The moose stomped on Chloe’s back with its two front hooves until Julie’s husband, Wade, threw a log at it, she said.”

This is an Experiment

By Eric Athas

This is a blogging experiment by Eric Athas (me) and Kim Perry of NPR. We are testing the experience of blogging about a community across the country that we don’t live in and don’t know much about. I am based in Boston and Kim is based at NPR headquarters in Washington, D.C.

On Friday, June 1, 2012, I will spend the entire day as a Juneau reporter, curating the sites, sounds and news from the Alaskan city. I will do all of this from a cafe in Boston. Kim will chip in with some blogging over the weekend.

Another reason why we’re conducting this experiment is to learn as much as possible about Juneau. On June 10 we will be visiting Juneau for a week for on-site Knight Foundation training at NPR member station KTOO.

Thanks for visiting and let us know what you think.
